Tenders had been issued for the construction of three flyovers and one underpass at a combined cost of Rs 1.1 billion on Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road between Chengalpattu and Tindivanam. According to sources within the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the tender process had been halted due to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). They mentioned that the contract would be granted after the election. It was specified that the flyovers were planned for the Uthiramerur Road-GST Road junction, close to the Padalam truck lay bay, and along the new road to Tiruvannamalai being constructed at Tindivanam. The underpass was designed to facilitate U-turns for vehicles at Maduranthakam. It was stated that all the flyovers would be four-lane structures, with sufficient width to match the six-lane carriageway below. The construction timeline was estimated to be one and a half years, with a potential completion date by December 2025. An official source emphasised that the project wouldn't require any land acquisition. They explained that these junctions necessitated infrastructure like flyovers and underpasses to ensure smooth traffic flow. Premkumar, residing in Uthiramerur, mentioned that buses heading to Vandavasi, Polur, Chetpet, and Tiruvannamalai traversed through Uthiramerur. He remarked that their locality was bustling, particularly after the widening of Bukkathurai Road. Premkumar suggested that NHAI should also prioritize pedestrian facilities along the national highway. Additionally, he proposed better illumination for internal roads. Meanwhile, the State Highways Department was reported to be in the process of constructing a bypass for Uthiramerur town. Tenders had been issued for the new road, estimated to cost Rs 350 million. The project, initially announced over a decade ago, was finally progressing.
