Indian Railways and RailTel to develop edge data centres

The Indian Railways and RailTel Corporation of India Limited has decided to set up Edge Data Centres across India.

The Edge Data centres will be situated at the network edge, closer to the end-users and devices.

RailTel said that data centres at the edge would allow faster performance and lower latency as the data will have to be moved to far data centres to process it.

PSU plans to set up data centres in the Indian Railways premises across 102 places, including Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns, and the business associates or partners should be registered in India. This initiative expects an investment opportunity of Rs 500 crore. The Expression of Interest (EoI) has been invited to set up Edge Data Centres. Initially, the capacity at each data centre will be about 20 Racks, about 5-10 KW each.

The PSU has more than 9,300 Points of Presence and extensive optical fibre connectivity along the rail tracks and across the premises of Indian Railways. The Indian Railways PSU will take care of the internet connectivity to the chosen partner of the business associate.

Using data centres for critical applications, including Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), Long-Term Evolution (LTE), etc., should be crucial.

The Edge Data Centres will allow RailTel to use IT infrastructure for caching of popular content to improve and enhance RailWire broadband customers. The IT infrastructure will be deployed for peering with content players and can be seen in the centres, improving cost economics for content delivery.
