According to a corporate release, Alstom, French manufacturers of rolling stock, have begun producing the light-weight Movia metro passenger trains for Bhopal and Indore metro projects. According to the terms of the agreement, which was signed by Alstom and Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MPMRCL) in July 2022, 156 Movia metro cars will be designed, manufactured, supplied, installed, tested, and put into service with 15 years of full maintenance. More than 5.7 million people in both cities will gain from this project.
Bhupendra Singh, Urban Development & Housing Minister, Madhya Pradesh stated, "I congratulate both Alstom and MPMRCL teams on this milestone. We trust the expertise that Alstom brings in and look forward to have the trains with world-class technology run in the cities of Indore and Bhopal soon.
The 52 trainsets, each with three cars, will be divided into 27 trainsets for Bhopal and 25 for Indore. These trains can run across the 31 km line in Bhopal with 30 stations and the 31.5 km line in Indore with 29 stations at a top speed of 80 km/hr. After the Agra and Kanpur metro projects, this is Alstom's second such joint order in India. Alstom is dedicated to offering a top-notch, sustainable, and efficient mass transit system that meets the unique demands of the people living in the cities of Bhopal and Indore.
Oliver Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India said, “We have designed these trains in record time and are commencing 100 per cent indigenous manufacturing at Savli. Alstom is a proud partner in India's transition towards green and clean public mobility and we are honoured to collaborate with MPMRCL for this prestigious project. The order, which has a 387 million euro (over Rs 32 billion) value, calls for the installation of the most recent Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, along with train control and telecommunication systems, each of which comes with a seven-year comprehensive maintenance contract.
In the past, Alstom India has been successful in providing top-notch metro trains for important cities, including Sydney, Queensland, and Montreal as well as Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Lucknow, and Kochi in India. Alstom has a significant presence in India with six manufacturing locations, four engineering centres, and more than 10,000 people to support both domestic and international projects. The company is currently producing new trainsets for India's first semi-high-speed Delhi-Meerut RRTS project as well as metro trains for the Agra, Kanpur, and Mumbai Metro Line 3 systems.
