The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has successfully completed its feasibility survey for the proposed Salem Rapid Transit system, commonly known as the Salem Metro Rail project. The plan envisions two routes spanning a total of 40 kilometres.
The detailed feasibility report (DFR) is expected to be submitted to the state government in the near future, according to officials.
Following the Indian government's announcement regarding metro rail projects in tier-2 cities, the Tamil Nadu government announced in 2021 that CMRL would conduct a feasibility study and prepare a DFR for the Salem metro. In 2022, CMRL awarded a tender for the feasibility study to Aarvee Associates, a Hyderabad-based company, for 38 crores.
"On August 14, CMRL officials informed the state government that the Salem metro project will be implemented in two routes covering 40 kilometers," stated a CMRL official.
The alignment of the routes was influenced by site factors and land availability, especially due to the presence of several flyovers in the city. However, experts involved in the survey work have reportedly indicated that the alignment should have no adverse impact on existing structures.
Based on the field study, one route will stretch from Karuppur to Nalikkalpatty, encompassing areas like Mamangam, Salem railway junction, four roads, district collectorate, old bus stand, Gugai, and Dasanaickenpatty. The other route will extend from Ayothiyapattinam to Uthamacholapuram, covering areas like Maniyanur, Ammapet, and Udayapatty.
The DFR will be submitted to the state government after senior CMRL officials visit and inspect the proposed routes.
