Eastern Freight corridor set to commence by year-end

Indian Railways is intending to make operational more than 1,300 route km of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor by the conclusion of this year.

On August 2, the track linking work on the Sonnagar - Ludhiana stretch was completed by the Railways. According to Railway officials, over 77% of the project had been commissioned by the end of June.

The process of track linking and commissioning of smaller sections of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor is presently in progress.

The Railways are currently in the process of developing a route spanning 1,337 route km. This route passes through Sahnewal in Punjab, traverses two other states - Uttar Pradesh and Haryana - and terminates at Sonnagar in Bihar.

An additional stretch covering 538 route km, which is also a segment of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor, connecting Sonnagar and Dankuni in West Bengal, was proposed to be developed through a PPP model.

Originally, the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor had a route length exceeding 1,850 km, crossing six states - Punjab (89 km), Haryana (72 km), Uttar Pradesh (1078 km), Bihar (239 km), Jharkhand (195 km), and West Bengal (203 km). This corridor consists of two distinct segments. One is an electrified double-track stretch spanning 1,409 km, extending from Dankuni in West Bengal to Khurja in Uttar Pradesh. The other is an electrified single-track segment, covering 447 km, which traverses Ludhiana (Dhandarikalan), Khurja, and Dadri across the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
