Final Trial Run Completed on Katra-Budgam Track of USBRL

The trial run on the Katra-Budgam railway track, part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), was successfully completed on Sunday. The 18-coach trial train departed from Katra railway station at 8 a.m. and reached Budgam, marking the completion of the final trial on the 326 km track.
The USBRL project, completed at a cost of Rs 410 billion, includes a 111 km section of tunnels, with the T-49 tunnel being the longest railway tunnel in India at 12.77 km. Additionally, the world鈥檚 highest railway bridge, the Chenab Bridge, was constructed over the Chenab River in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. This iconic steel and concrete arch bridge spans 1,315 meters with a 467-meter arch and stands at a height of 359 meters above the river bed.
Indian Railways has also constructed its first cable-stayed bridge over the Anji Khad, which features a deck 331 meters above the riverbed and a main pylon 193 meters tall. The bridge, supported by a single pylon, rises to a height of 1,086 feet, equivalent to a 77-story building.
The USBRL, through its challenging construction over mountainous terrains, rivers, and adverse weather conditions, is considered one of the most ambitious railway projects in the world. It is expected to enhance Kashmir鈥檚 horticulture, agriculture, tourism, trade, and education, and offer a more convenient and affordable travel option for citizens.
The inauguration of the rail link, which will include Vande Bharat trains operating between Katra and Baramulla, is anticipated to take place soon, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to officiate the event. The official inauguration date is yet to be announced.
