Final U-Girder Installed for Chennai Metro Line-4 in ECV-02 Package

Chennai Metro has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of the launch of all 624 U-girders under Package C4-ECV-02 of Line 4, which extends from Light House to Poonamallee Bypass. The work was executed at piers SP-04 and SP-05 of the upcoming Kumananchavadi Metro Station. With this development, the installation of all 3,202 precast elements for this section, including U-girders, pier arms, portal beams, and pier caps, has been completed.
The package also included the installation of two Open Web Girders (OWGs) over the Tambaram � Maduravoyal Bypass. The casting of all required components was completed in June 2024 at the joint venture’s facility in Kolappancheri.
Hindustan Construction Company � KEC International (HCC � KEC JV) secured Package ECV-02 from Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) in May 2021 for Rs 10.07 billion, with a construction timeline of 36 months. Spanning 7.945 km, the package connects Poonamallee Bypass to Porur and includes the development of nine metro stations. The project also involves the construction of a 7.945 km viaduct primarily consisting of U-girders and an additional viaduct leading to the Poonamallee Depot.
The nine stations under this package include Chennai Bypass Crossing, Ramachandra Hospital, Iyyapanthangal Bus Depot, Katupakkam, Kumananchavadi, Karayanchavadi, Mullai Thottam, Poonamallee Bus Terminus, and Poonamallee Bypass.
Additionally, CMRL has received two Alstom train sets for Line 4, which have been delivered to the Poonamallee Depot from Sri City. The track work for a 2-kilometer section between Mullai Thottam and Poonamallee Depot has been completed. Trial runs with Alstom trains are expected to begin in the coming months, following initial test runs conducted using a trolley along the newly laid tracks.
