The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has set a target to complete station improvement works at Ghatkopar by 2027. While broader upgrades are in progress, commuters are already benefiting from developments completed under Phase I of the project, which was commissioned in December 2023.
The chief public relations officer (CPRO) of MRVC, Sunil Udasi, mentioned that the corporation is committed to transforming Ghatkopar station into a model of modern railway infrastructure. He emphasized that the progress of Phase II is on track, with the goal of meeting deadlines while prioritizing commuter convenience.
Phase II includes the construction of two Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), each 12 meters wide and 75 meters long鈥攐ne at the CSMT-end and the other at the Kalyan-end鈥攁long with a 300-meter-long, 8-meter-wide elevated west deck above platform 1. Work on the elevated west deck has already commenced, with partial site clearance and pile foundation work for the deck columns underway. Other upgrades include a 4-meter-wide skywalk connecting platform 4 to the north-end municipal FOB, service buildings for the GRP and electrical rooms, and a G+1 structure on the east side with ticket counters and office spaces.
The project will also feature six staircases, four double-discharge staircases, seven escalators, and three lifts.
Udasi provided an update on the progress, stating that the foundation for the south FOB is complete, and the fabrication of columns and cross beams is underway. He added that work on the north FOB has progressed, with the demolition of an old booking office nearly halfway completed. For the west deck, pile foundation work has started, and service buildings have been partially constructed or relocated.
Phase I included the commissioning of a 75x12-meter FOB, a 15x45-meter east deck, and a booking office with four counters. Six escalators have been installed, with the latest one commissioned on December 6. Additional amenities, such as a two-wheeler parking area beneath the east deck and a fa莽ade on the east side, are in the final stages. However, the removal of an obstructive municipal toilet is delaying some of the work.
Udasi concluded by saying that these upgrades will transform Ghatkopar into a model station, aligning with MRVC's vision for commuter-friendly infrastructure.
