Indian Railways rolls out new generation smart coaches

The Indian Railways has rolled out upgraded sleeper rakes of the Tejas express to facilitate better travel experience with enhanced comfort.

The prestigious Mumbai Rajdhani Express train will use these bright golden-hued coaches, which have been enhanced with smart features, to provide the best in the class travel experience. This new rake made its first run on Monday.

The Rajdhani Express will have two Tejas sleeper coach rakes. One of the rakes contains the first Tejas Smart sleeper coaches to be introduced on Indian Railways.

The new train will be equipped with advanced smart features that will improve passenger safety and comfort. With the help of intelligent sensor-based systems, the smart coach aims to provide world-class facilities to passengers.

It has a Passenger Information and Coach Computing Unit (PICCU) that sends data to a central server via GSM network connectivity. PICCU will record WSP, toilet odour sensors, panic switch, CCTV recording and other items integrated with the fire detection and alarm system, choke filter sensor and air quality, and energy metre.

Indian Railways intends to move away from preventive maintenance and toward predictive maintenance with the Tejas Smart Coach. Indian Railways' introduction of the modern Tejas sleeper type train for long-distance travel is yet another paradigm shift in the company's efforts to improve passengers' travel experiences.

Passenger Announcement/Passenger Information System (PA/PIS): Two LCDs located inside each coach provide passengers with important journey-related information such as the next station, remaining distance, expected arrival time, delay, and safety-related messages.

Digital destination board with a flush design An LED Digital Destination Board has been installed on each coach, with the displayed data divided into two rows. The train number and coach type are displayed in the first row, while the destination and intermediate stations are displayed in scrolling text in multiple languages in the second row.

Security and surveillance monitoring: Each coach is equipped with six cameras that record live video. CCTV cameras with day/night vision, facial recognition in low light, and a network video recorder are available.

Guard controls all of the main entrance doors from a central location. The train will not begin to run until all doors have been closed.

Fire Alarm, Detection, and Suppression System: Automatic Fire Alarm and Detection Systems are installed in all coaches.

Each passenger has a reading light on their berth. Climbing arrangement in the upper berth includes convenient upper berth arrangement.

Modern Coach Factory (MCF) manufactures Tejas type Sleeper coaches, which will gradually replace premium long-distance trains on the Indian Railways network.
