Kochi Metro phase 2: Pink line construction starts in Dec

Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) has recently announced a tender for the design and construction of viaducts for the second phase of the Kochi Metro, which is set to connect JLN Stadium to Infopark-Kakkanad.

It was mentioned that this project would encompass the construction of an elevated line stretching over 11.3 kilometres and featuring a total of 11 stations. The anticipated commencement of work was set for December of the current year.

The viaduct tender for the Pink Line has been published on the KMRL website and e-tender portal. The deadline for submission was stated to be October 25, 2023. Additionally, it was mentioned that a pre-bid meeting had been scheduled for September 22, and the contract would be granted to the successful bidder by mid-November.

As per the information provided, it was expected that the civil construction work would be finished within a span of 20 months, followed by an additional four months dedicated to system and signalling work.

In the second phase of construction, it was noted that the precast method would be employed to expedite the civil construction work. A precast yard, covering approximately six hectares, had been identified at HMT Kalamasery.

According to Loknath Behera, the Managing Director of KMRL, the Pink Line was anticipated to become operational by December 2025. Behera further mentioned that the Pink Line would exclusively accept digital tickets, as part of an endeavour to promote paperless ticketing. This decision was aligned with the objective of reducing environmental impact and embracing digital advancements.
