Maha-Metro Invites Bids for Pune Metro’s Swargate–Katraj Extension

Maha-Metro has officially begun the tendering process for the Swargate–Katraj underground extension of Pune Metro’s Purple Line, marking a major step forward for urban transport in southern Pune.

The 5.46-km stretch, fully underground, is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve metro connectivity to the southern parts of the city.

The project will be carried out in two stages: Stage I includes the design and construction of underground stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj, along with the connecting tunnels.

Stage II covers two additional stations—Bibwewadi and Balaji Nagar—which were added following public demand and later approved by the state government.

The inclusion of the two extra stations has increased the project cost, with the state government agreeing to fund the additional Rs 6.83 billion required for their construction.

The tender was floated earlier this month with a submission deadline of May 21, 2025. The estimated contract duration is 42 months from the date of the Letter of Acceptance. A pre-bid meeting has been scheduled for April 25, 2025, and the Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) for bidders has been set at Rs 84.3 million.

Once bids are evaluated and a contractor is selected, construction is expected to begin in the next 34 months. The extension is likely to be completed by 2029.

The Purple Line currently runs from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate, covering 16.59 km with 13 stations. The new extension is expected to significantly expand the line’s reach and impact, offering better access to dense residential and commercial areas in southern Pune.
