Mumbai Metro-3 phase-i trials begin next month

The trial run for Phase-1 of the Mumbai Metro Line 3, stretching from Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is scheduled to commence in November 2023. Following this, the overhead electrical lines will be charged in both directions, allowing for trial runs of the entire Phase-1.

Originally slated to begin operations in December of this year, Phase-1's commencement will be postponed until next year due to the delayed trial run. In August 2022, MMRC conducted a short-distance trial over a three-km stretch between Sariput Nagar in Aarey and Marol Naka. However, track laying work on a small section remains incomplete.

Additionally, the Phase-2 line from BKC to Colaba, initially planned to start six months after Phase-1 operations, will also face delays.

The trains operating on Metro-3 Line will have the capacity to transport 3,000 passengers simultaneously and have been specifically designed for peak hour peak direction traffic (PHPDT), accommodating 72,000 passengers. These trains feature a communication-based train control (CBTC) signalling system for driverless train operations.

The Metro-3 corridor, spanning 33.5 km along Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ, marks Mumbai's first underground metro corridor.
