Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 set to extend up to NMIA

Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 is set for a 3.02-km extension from Pendhar to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), with a key interchange at Sagarsangam. Developed by CIDCO, the link aims to offer seamless last-mile airport access and boost connectivity between residential, industrial, and commercial zones.

The current 11.1-km Line 1, operational since late 2023, connects CBD Belapur to Taloja MIDC and has already emerged as a daily lifeline for commuters. The extension will further streamline travel for air passengers and improve intra-city mobility.

CIDCO has built a central Operations Control Centre for real-time monitoring and driver training, ensuring scalability and safety as the network expands. Plans are already underway for Metro Line 2 (Pendhar to eastern NMIA) and Line 8 (NMIA to Mumbai鈥檚 CSMIA), which will cut airport-to-airport travel time via key urban nodes like Vashi, Nerul, and Kurla.

The project aligns with Maharashtra鈥檚 green mobility push, with solar-powered stations, regenerative braking, and low-emission operations. Officials say the phased rollout ensures infrastructure growth matches urban demand while promoting transit-oriented development.

Urban planners say last-mile links鈥攍ike buses, bike lanes, and shared mobility鈥攚ill be critical to maximise the benefits of the metro expansion. If executed well, Navi Mumbai could become a national model for integrated and sustainable transit planning.
