Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the 3.5 km Civil Court to Swargate underground metro stretch during his visit to Pune on September 26-27. The safety inspections of the stretch, conducted by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), are expected to be completed in the next two days, paving the way for the official launch.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the Prime Minister鈥檚 visit, although the final schedule is yet to be announced. Maha Metro officials are currently finalising the formalities to secure CMRS certification, which is anticipated early next week.
In addition to inaugurating the underground section, Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the Swargate to Katraj Metro extension. Sources indicate a proposal for the Prime Minister to travel between Civil Court and Swargate stations during the launch is under consideration, though the details are still being finalised. During a previous visit, Modi had taken a Metro ride while inaugurating the Garware College section.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) is expected to release a detailed itinerary soon. Local authorities have held preliminary meetings to discuss the visit's logistics and preparations. Modi may also address a public gathering in the city center following the inauguration.
BJP leaders view the visit as a strategic move ahead of the state assembly elections. A BJP functionary noted that the Centre and state government have played a pivotal role in expediting the Pune Metro project. "PM Modi had laid the foundation stone for the 33 km-long Metro routes (PCMC-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi) and later inaugurated sections of both routes. Now, he will launch the remaining stretch, showcasing the party's commitment to delivering on its promises," the functionary stated.
Fadnavis emphasised that Pune Metro services are in expansion mode, with the government providing full support for further growth. The Metro network saw over 3 lakh commuters on the immersion day of Ganeshotsav, reflecting its growing significance in the city.
