Pune Metro begins Pimpri-Nigdi extension

The commencement of work on the long-awaited extended Pune Metro route from Pimpri to Bhakti Shakti Chowk in Nigdi has been announced. It is expected to ease commuting for the residents of Nigdi Pradhikaran.

It was mentioned by Anna Bansode, MLA of Pimpri assembly constituency, that citizens from Pradhikaran had persistently demanded the Metro extension from Pimpri to Nigdi. This demand had been continuously followed up on. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar assured that it would be met. Consequently, soon, Pimpri-Chinchwad residents would be able to travel from Nigdi to Swargate by Metro.

On October 23, 2023, approval was granted by the Central government for extending Pune Metro from Pimpri to Nigdi. Following this approval, Maha Metro, the implementing authority of the Pune Metro project, floated the tender for carrying out the work of this extension at Rs 9.10 billion. The construction work is scheduled to be finalized within 130 weeks from the approval date.

The total length of the Pune Metro extension from Pimpri to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk is 4.519 kilometres. A breakdown of the distance between stations is as follows:

? The distance from PCMC to Chinchwad station is 1.463 km. ? The distance from Chinchwad to Akurdi station is 1.651 km. ? The distance from Akurdi to Nigdi station is 1.062 km. ? The distance from Nigdi station to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk is 975 metres.

Stations will be located in Chinchwad, Akurdi, Pradhikaran, and Bhakti-Shakti Chowk, thereby improving connectivity and accessibility for residents in these areas.

Following the barricading work, digging has commenced at Bhakti-Shakti Chowk and Pawale Bridge. Initially, MahaMetro will conduct soil tests and finalize the route layout before commencing the construction of the pillars.

The Pune Metro Phase 1 project was approved by the central government in 2016. It covers a total distance of 31.254 km and features 3 corridors. Commercial operations in section 2 of Phase 1 were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 6, 2022. Currently, the 17.4 km long Purple Line (PCMC-Swargate) and the 15.7 km long Aqua Line (Vanaz-Ramwadi) are operational.
