Successful Electric Locomotive Trial Conducted On Madurai-Bodi Route

The Madurai Railway Division successfully conducted a light engine trial on Sunday using an electric locomotive along the newly electrified section between Madurai and Bodinayakkanur. The locomotive departed Madurai Junction at 10:57 AM and reached Bodi at 12:33 PM, marking a significant step toward the commencement of electric traction on the route.

Railway sources confirmed that the section is set to begin electric operations from February 4, as all necessary preparations have been completed. Ahead of the trial, the division energised the section, including the overhead equipment (OHE) system, loop lines, goods shed, and sidings, with a high voltage of 25,000 volts.

With the section now live, the railway division issued a safety warning to the public, passengers, and workers near the railway tracks. Authorities urged everyone to exercise caution around electrified areas. People are advised not to touch electric wires or related equipment and to maintain a safe distance of at least two metres to prevent the risk of electric shocks. During rain or lightning, passengers should avoid using unfolded umbrellas near the OHE lines.

The division also highlighted the dangers of climbing on locomotives, carriages, or wagons, as such actions often lead to accidents, particularly involving individuals taking selfies on moving trains. Additionally, throwing objects onto overhead wires from railway platforms or foot overbridges poses a severe risk of electric shocks.

In a further safety reminder, the division stated that tree cutting or trimming near the OHE lines requires prior permission from railway authorities. It also warned against unsafe practices at level crossings, such as travelling on top of vehicles or overloading goods vehicles. Height gauges have been installed on roads before level crossings to alert drivers of the maximum permissible height for safe passage. Carrying metal flagpoles above the permitted height while crossing level crossings can also present significant hazards.
