Warangal Metro Neo ready for execution, DPR prepared

Warangal has inched closer to be the second city in Telangana to have a metro rail network after Hyderabad, as the detailed project report for the Warangal Metro Neo has been prepared and is to be submitted to the state cabinet soon.

The Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) had appointed the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) to examine the feasibility of an MRTS in Warangal. Subsequently, MMRCL prepared a DPR in conformity with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs guidelines and submitted it to the KUDA.

The Warangal metro will be a Neo system having a combination of ground-level and elevated systems, covering a distance of 15.5 km with 21 stations. The Telangana government has allocated Rs 150 crore for the execution of the project.

The metro will run between Kazipet-Hanamkonda-Warangal via the District Police Office (DPO) junction.

The Warangal metro project is a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) offering low-cost, energy-efficient and eco-friendly urban transportation for tier-1 and tier-2 cities. It is a lighter and smaller system than the regular metro systems and costs much less.

Among the 21 stations proposed for the project, 12 stations will be at an elevated level and nine at ground level. The speed of metros would be 70 kmph, while the scheduled speed would be 25 kmph.

Advanced signalling and telecommunications systems are being proposed for the project. Metros will be equipped with Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems with anti-collision devices.

Traffic lights will be provided at major locations, and the coaches will be operated by drivers with a pre-defined speed limit. A central command control will monitor the operations of metros.
