Western Railway Swiftly Replaces Bridge 5 Steel Girder Near Mumbai Central

As part of a major infrastructure upgrade, the steel girder of Bridge 5, located between Mumbai Central and Grant Road on the Mumbai Central division of Western Railway, has been replaced with a specially designed Non-Standard Pre-Stressed Concrete (PSC) slab. This upgrade was crucial for improving the safety and durability of the bridge, which plays a vital role in the busy Mumbai rail network.

The project, originally expected to take 13 hours, was completed ahead of schedule in just 10 hours, thanks to efficient planning and execution. Bridge 5, a skew bridge with a 49-degree angle and a span of 12 meters, presented significant challenges due to limited space. To carry out the replacement, the team used 10 PSC slabs, each measuring 11,565 mm in length and 650 mm in depth, along with ballast retainers.

Due to the site conditions, the crane had to be positioned directly on the through lines, which required the removal of overhead electrical equipment on three tracks. Despite these constraints, the project team successfully managed the task with precision and careful coordination. The completion of this upgrade not only improves the structural integrity of the bridge but also contributes to the smoother operation of trains on one of Mumbai's busiest rail corridors. This project sets a new standard for future infrastructure upgrades within the Western Railway division.
