Adani Ports receives extension for Kerala harbour dredging activities

Kerala Port Minister V N Vasavan announced that Adani Ports has been granted an extension to complete dredging activities in the navigation channel of Muthalappozhi harbour, which has experienced frequent boat accidents and fatalities over the years. The government had originally entered into an agreement with Adani Ports in 2018, with the contract expiring on June 11, 2024. However, due to delays, an extension was provided to ensure the completion of the work.

Responding to a question during the assembly's question hour, Vasavan explained that discussions were held between port representatives and respective ministers, leading to the decision to extend the contract. Despite the contract's expiration, the dredging work is on-going.

Congress legislator Saneesh Kumar Joseph inquired about potential actions against the port authorities for failing to fulfil their commitments. Vasavan, speaking on behalf of Fisheries Minister Saji Cheriyan, did not provide a definitive answer. Joseph highlighted the critical situation in Muthalappozhi, where 73 lives have been lost. Another Congress legislator, M Vincent, urged the government to implement immediate measures to address the fishermen's concerns.

Vincent also mentioned that while the state government had submitted a Rs 1.64 billion project to the Centre for Muthalappozhi's development, the approval process and subsequent work would take several years. Over 70 people have reportedly died, and numerous boats have capsized in Muthalappozhi, where a river and lake meet the Arabian Sea, in recent years. (Source:ET)
