The upcoming Port-Maduravoyal project in Chennai is poised to significantly enhance connectivity in the region. The construction of a $58.85 bn double-decker elevated highway spanning 20.6km, connecting Chennai Port and Maduravoyal, is set to kick off soon. The project is anticipated to be completed within approximately two and a half years, promising improved mobility and accessibility for the area.
Sources have confirmed the assignment of tenders, indicating the imminent start of construction. Sunil Paliwal, Chairman of Chennai Port, announced this development while raising the national flag at the Sri Babu Jagajeevan Ram Sports Stadium. He also highlighted recent achievements of the port, including the launch of cruise ship services and the subsequent introduction of international cruises.
In line with environmental conservation efforts, Paliwal shared that 12,000 saplings have been planted within the port's premises. The greening initiative is expected to significantly transform the port's surroundings. Additionally, to facilitate education, tuition fees at the Port Authority's higher secondary school in Tondiarpet have been reduced by two-thirds, accompanied by free uniforms, books, and shoes for students.
Paliwal noted the positive impact of these initiatives, leading to an increase in student enrollment. As part of a celebratory event, cash awards were presented to children of Kamarajar Port employees, Central Industrial Security Force personnel, and women from self-help groups employed at Kamarajar Port, recognizing their exceptional performance in the past year. These endeavours underscore the port's commitment to recognizing and fostering excellence within its community.
