CMA CGM and Suez Partner to Boost Biomethane for Green Shipping

CMA CGM Group and Suez have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to form a long-term partnership focused on biomethane, a renewable fuel produced from waste recovery, aimed at decarbonising shipping in Europe. The collaboration will explore three key areas:

Biomethane Supply: Suez will supply up to 100,000 tonnes of biomethane annually by 2030, which CMA CGM will use for its gas-powered ships, significantly cutting carbon emissions in maritime transport.

Investment in Production: Both companies will establish a joint investment structure with an initial funding of 鈧100 million to develop biomethane production sites in Europe. These sites will supply both CMA CGM and other industry players.

Research & Development: The partnership will advance research into innovative technologies, such as hydrothermal gasification, to enhance biofuel production capabilities.

CMA CGM is committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050, having invested $18 billion in 131 vessels that can use low-carbon energies, set to be operational by 2028. Meanwhile, Suez's circular solutions helped avoid 6.4 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2023, as it converts millions of tonnes of waste into energy annually.

This partnership marks a significant step toward decarbonising the shipping industry and enhancing energy independence for Europe.
