Cochin Shipyard Builds Green Tugs

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has commenced construction of two green tugs ahead of formal contracts, marking a major stride in India's journey toward sustainable maritime operations. These tugs, powered by hybrid-electric propulsion systems, reflect CSL’s proactive push for eco-friendly vessels under the broader Make in India initiative.

Built to meet the highest environmental standards, the green tugs are part of the shipyard’s strategy to support India’s net-zero emissions target by 2070. The vessels will offer improved energy efficiency, reduced emissions, and lower operational costs—serving critical roles in port operations and coastal towing.

By beginning construction even before securing contracts, CSL demonstrates confidence in future demand driven by global and domestic mandates for decarbonisation in shipping. These are expected to be India’s first indigenously developed electric-hybrid tugboats, setting a precedent for future shipbuilding projects.

The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Green Tug Transition Programme, which aims to deploy at least 50 percent green tugs in major ports by 2030.

With innovation, sustainability, and strategic foresight at its core, CSL is positioning itself as a frontrunner in India’s green maritime revolution.
