Sonowal flags off India's first international cruise vessel

The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated a significant milestone in India's tourism industry as he flagged off the maiden international cruise vessel, MV Empress, from Chennai to Sri Lanka. The event marked the commencement of operations at the international cruise terminal in Chennai, constructed at a cost of Rs 172.1 million, symbolising the dawn of a new era in cruise tourism and maritime trade within the country.

During the event, the Union Minister emphasised the government's commitment, under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to develop cruise tourism and enhance maritime trade opportunities in India. With the country's rich coastal heritage and cultural diversity, India holds immense potential in the cruise tourism sector. The launch of the inaugural cruise service between Chennai and Sri Lanka not only signifies a significant milestone but also opens up new avenues for cruise tourism in the country. As world-class cruise services become more affordable and accessible, people can indulge in luxurious amenities, entertainment, and breathtaking views.

The commencement of this cruise service is the result of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Chennai Port and Waterways Leisure Tourism Pvt Ltd during the first Incredible India International Cruise Conference in 2022. The domestic circuit has already witnessed an overwhelming response, with 85,000 passengers availing the cruise services through 37 vessels. The extension of the cruise service to the international circuit is expected to further boost the business of cruise tourism in the region. The modern cruise terminal at Chennai Port covers an area of 2,880 sq mtr and can accommodate up to 3,000 passengers simultaneously, providing a seamless and enjoyable experience for travellers.

In addition to this milestone, plans are underway to develop international cruise terminals at Andamans, Puducherry, and Lakshadweep, further augmenting cruise tourism in India. Moreover, new terminals at Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, and Kolkata are set to enhance cruise ship tourism across the country. With such developments, the government aims to tap into the vast potential of cruise tourism, showcasing India's maritime splendour to the world and providing unforgettable experiences for travellers.
