Sonowal inaugurates key infra projects at Chennai and Kamarajar ports

"Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated infrastructure projects worth 鈧187.33 crore to strengthen operations at Chennai and Kamarajar Ports, enhancing India's maritime infrastructure and green port initiatives.

The key projects include:

EXIM Godowns at Chennai Port: Four newly constructed godowns, covering 18,000 square meters at a cost of 鈧73.91 crore, will provide storage for sensitive cargo, such as agricultural products and food grains. This project, funded under the Sagarmala scheme, supports India鈥檚 goal of expanding trade capacity at major ports.

Concrete Coastal Road at Chennai Port: A newly constructed 350-meter-long, 12-meter-wide road, costing 鈧4 crore, will facilitate smoother transport of heavy cargo and containers, improving access to the Second Container Terminal at Chennai Port. This initiative reduces dust pollution and promotes environmental compliance.

Southern Railway Connectivity at Kamarajar Port: The 鈧88.91 crore expansion includes the construction of a 2.65 km railway line, three new rail bridges, and upgraded level crossings. This will double the rail handling capacity from 22 to 44 rakes per day, ensuring faster and safer cargo movement.

Shore Power Supply Facility at Kamarajar Port: A 鈧20.51 crore facility at Kamarajar Port will provide shore power to coal vessels, reducing emissions and helping vessels operate without diesel engines, aligning with India鈥檚 Green Port Guidelines.

These projects are part of the Ministry's broader efforts to modernize ports, strengthen maritime connectivity, and position India as a key player in global trade while adhering to environmental sustainability goals.
