The world's largest container ship, MSC IRINA, arrived at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, marking a major milestone for the port, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2. This development is anticipated to benefit time-sensitive cargo such as perishable goods, readymade garments, and industrial accessories produced in South India by offering faster access to European markets.Industry observers noted that the ship鈥檚 stopover has strategically positioned Vizhinjam Port and the state of Kerala on the global maritime trade map. The port is now viewed as one of the emerging major maritime hubs with long-term significance.The long-standing logistical challenges faced by the Indian trading community in terms of time and location are expected to be significantly mitigated. Indian goods can now reach European supermarkets more quickly and in better condition, creating new global market opportunities for domestic manufacturers.The vessel measures 399.9 metres in length and 61.3 metres in width鈥攏early four times the size of a standard football field. It was specifically built to transport high volumes of containers between Asia and Europe.
