The Union Ministry of Defence has recommended that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) approve the Bhubhu Jot tunnel project in Himachal Pradesh, highlighting its strategic importance as an alternative route to Leh-Ladakh.
The Defence Ministry underlined the vital role the tunnel and the associated highway would play in enhancing the operational readiness of the armed forces in critical border regions.
Beyond its strategic relevance, the project is anticipated to bring considerable socio-economic benefits to the region. The necessary budgetary provisions for the project will now be allocated accordingly.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the clearance for the construction of the long-awaited Bhubhu Jot Tunnel has been granted, reaffirming the state government's commitment to the project.
"I personally met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on October 25, urging the prioritisation of this project given its strategic significance. I also raised the matter with Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The construction of this tunnel will be a major milestone for the state's development," he stated.
Once completed, the proposed Bhubhu Jot Tunnel will reduce the distance between Kangra and Kullu by 55 kilometres, further shortening travel times to Dharamsala or Pathankot. The road will connect Kullu with the Mandi-Pathankot National Highway via Lag Valley, Bhubu Jot, and Shilh-Badhwaniand, benefiting local populations and promoting tourism in the region, thus boosting the economy.
The state government has prioritised the tunnel鈥檚 construction to improve road connectivity, encourage sustainable development, and minimise environmental impact.
"This project will transform Himachal Pradesh by strengthening strategic infrastructure while fostering socio-economic growth," added Sukhu.
During winter, Bhubu Jot is often covered in heavy snow, but the proposed tunnel will provide all-weather road connectivity. Strategically, it will reduce the distance from Pathankot to Manali by 63 kilometres and cut travel time by two hours.
