In 2021, over 6k Smart City projects worth Rs 1,84,998 cr tendered

The Indian government launched the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) in June 2015. Around 100 smart cities were selected between January 2016 and June 2018 through four rounds of competition.

The implementation of the projects under SCM has witnessed considerable progress. As of 12 November, 6,452 projects of Rs 1,84,998 crore have been tendered, from which 5,809 projects of Rs 1,56,571 crore are under implementation or completed.

The speed of project implementation has increased by 270% in projects tendered and 407% growth in completed projects over the last 39 months.

SCM extended the period of implementation to up to June 2023, and all the smart cities are expected to complete the projects within the deadline.

As of 12 November, the government released Rs 27,359.60 crore under the SCM, from which Rs 22,467.81 crore has been utilised by the smart cities.
