The Smart City Thiruvananthapuram (SCTL), the implementing agency of smart city projects in the capital, announced that the College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET) had been tasked with conducting soil testing at the medical college site as part of constructing the proposed multi-level car parking (MLCP) facility. CET was also assigned to assess the strength of the already built pile at Putharikandam Ground, where another MLCP was planned.
It was informed that the construction of the two MLCPs was scheduled to commence in the last week of May. RRTL, the contractor for the MLCPs, had already completed the one at Palayam and was also in the process of designing the upcoming facilities.
A senior official from SCTL mentioned that the designs for the two MLCPs were nearing completion. The official stated, "Before finalising the design, we need to conduct the soil test to ensure the strength of the soil. The CET test result is expected on May 15. The design for the MLCP then has to be approved by SCTL."
Additionally, the official noted that the piling work at Putharikandam had already been completed, and the strength of the pile foundation would be assessed by CET and other private agencies.
It was anticipated that the new MLCPs would be completed within six months once the construction began. These projects aimed to alleviate the parking congestion in busy areas like East Fort and Medical College. The MLCP in Putharikandam would also provide parking space for two-wheelers. The project at Putharikandam was estimated to cost Rs 200 million, while the medical college MLCP cost was budgeted at Rs 160.58 million.
The MLCP projects involved an automated parking system in EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) mode, covering design, manufacturing, supply, installation, and maintenance.
