A new truck terminal equipped with concrete pavement, dormitory, restaurant, and gatehouse facilities will be coming up at the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) by 2022-23.
The new truck terminal would have concrete pavement, restaurant, gatehouse, and dormitory facilities. The project would be developed at five crore and is expected to come up by 2022-23, said Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.
The minister said that the US Mallya Gate would be modified at Rs 3.22 crore, and is expected to be completed by March 2022.
The minister said that the business development center would give all facilities under one roof to the EXIM trade fraternity.
An additional truck parking area of 17000 sq meters would be made at Rs 1.9 crore, he said.
Sonowal said that the container and other general cargo traffic had been growing at NMPT due to improved hinterland connectivity.
For cargo evacuation, around 500 trucks are moving regularly from New Mangalore Port to distant places. Though the Port has provided parking facilities for approximately 160 trucks, the present existing area is found to be inadequate, Sonowal said.
Chairman, NMPT, Dr A V Ramana, said the gate complex has different lanes for movement of trucks, four-wheeler passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, radiological monitoring equipment, provisions of RFID system, pedestrians, and many more.
As per the ministry note, the New Mangalore Port is the only major Port of Karnataka located between Cochin and Goa ports, which has 15 fully operational berths, coal, handling containers, and other cargo.
