Sonowal opens School of Logistics and Communication in Agartala

The School of Logistics, Waterways, and Communication was opened in Agartala by Dr Manik Saha, Chief Minister, Tripura, and Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and Ayush. The school will help the area's talented workforce develop into top-tier professionals in the logistics and transportation fields. According to Sonowal, the school will help unleash the intrinsic potential of the human resources along our magnificent rivers in order to realise the Northeast's projected economic potential.

The Centre for Logistic, Communication, and Waterways would help stakeholders including businesses, exporters/importers, Chambers of Commerce and Industries, local entrepreneurs, tour operators, etc. undertake studies/research, training, workshops/seminars. It was established under the State Institute of Rural Development and Public Administration (SIPARD). SIPARD is a self-governing organisation that receives funding from both the Tripura government and the Indian government's ministry of rural development.

In response to a question about whether the Northeast's waterways could be a source of economic growth, Sonowal stated, "Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has been taking all necessary steps to power the engine of the new India, i.e., our beautiful northeast, reach its maximum potential. In order to advance commercial and passenger travel in the area, our Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has been striving to revitalise our intricate system of inland waterways in accordance with Modi ji's vision.

In addition to being a quick, economical, and clean mode of transportation, this offers fresh promise for the expansion of trade with the global market. Inland waterways that are longer, deeper, and wider have the potential to increase regional economic activity and improve international trade in addition to decongest and lower carbon footprints.

The investment has now been increased to Rs 1.48 billion until 2024鈥2025 in order to fully build NW 16 (Barak) and the IBP Route no 5 & 6 and 9 & 10 for easy connectivity within and from the region. Tripura will be connected by IBP routes 9 and 10 to Kolkata/Haldia Port as part of the PM Gati Shakti project for multi-modal connectivity before continuing on to Chittagong Port in Bangladesh.
