The Bengal government has announced plans to launch 78 solid waste management projects across the state to maintain cleanliness in forests and tourist destinations. Despite ongoing awareness efforts by the forest and tourism departments, as well as various NGOs, littering remains a major issue in these ecologically sensitive areas.
A government official explained that pamphlets outlining proper waste disposal guidelines are distributed at sanctuary entrances, but tourists often disregard these instructions, leaving the environment vulnerable. Becharam Manna, Minister of State for Panchayat and Rural Development, confirmed that the government will set up small and medium-scale waste management systems in forest and tourist locations.
鈥淥nce survey reports are compiled by the zilla parishads, we will issue tenders and begin work on this important initiative,鈥 Manna added.
A recent example of the need for waste management was highlighted after a local fair in Jainti, Alipurduar district, when 300 kilograms of waste were collected by officials from Buxa Tiger Reserve. Manab Bakshi, Secretary of the Alipurduar District Tourism Association, praised the initiative, emphasising the importance of responsible waste disposal for the protection of both the forest and its wildlife.
In Alipurduar, solid waste management systems will be installed in key locations such as Buxa Fort, Jainti, Rajabhatkhawa, and Jaldapara.
