The corporation has made the decision to establish an innovation hub aimed at showcasing their efforts to enhance solid waste management in the city. The primary purpose of this hub will be to serve as a platform for knowledge sharing, where experts can present suggestions and strategies regarding waste management.
According to senior officials, the corporation intends to locate this facility in Sengulam colony. Initially, there were plans to set up a micro-compost centre in the same area. However, due to objections raised by residents, that idea was abandoned. Instead, the corporation is now considering the establishment of an innovation hub on the plot.
This hub will effectively highlight the measures undertaken by the corporation to improve solid waste management. It will be open for visits from students, officials, and experts from other cities, enabling them to share their suggestions on how to manage solid waste effectively. A senior corporation official stated, "We envision that this platform will help educate future generations about solid waste management."
The corporation officials expressed their hopes that the innovation hub would alleviate the concerns of residents. They clarified that while the city currently has 40 micro-compost centres, many residents have raised objections against them. An officer explained, "The innovation hub will address these concerns by demonstrating how we process waste at such facilities."
While some residents appreciated the corporation's initiative, others emphasised the need to improve waste management at the existing micro-compost centres. S Lalitha from Woraiyur shared her thoughts, saying, "An innovation hub would certainly benefit students and others by increasing awareness about waste management. However, it may not fully address the concerns raised by residents regarding the micro-compost centres. Many of these centres are seen carelessly dumping waste on their premises. If the corporation can offer a solution to this issue, people would be more accepting of such centres regardless of their location."
