New Delhi is likely to have electronic waste management parks soon as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal chaired a meeting to discuss setting up of e-waste management parks in the city, where electronic waste can be safely dismantled and recycled. Baijal asked the Delhi chief secretary to look into forming a steering committee that would choose a consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) and oversee the project. The LG requested that a time-bound action plan be put in place to establish these e-waste parks in Delhi, claiming that there was currently no mechanism in place to properly handle the electronic waste. Baijal highlighted at the meeting, which was also attended by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, Minister Satyendar Jain, Minister for Environment, Forest & Wildlife, Development and General Administration, Gopal Rai, Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Dev, Delhi Development Authority Vice Chairman, and commissioners from the corporations, among other senior officials, that e-waste was not only hazardous to the environment but also to human health. Electrical appliances, electronic items, computers and accessories, and mobile phones, among other things, are estimated to generate about two lakh tonnes of e-waste in Delhi. The establishment of an e-waste park will make Delhi the first city in the country to have such a facility. According to reports in the media, LG Baijal has requested various bodies to investigate land identification in collaboration with the Delhi Development Authority, as well as the latest technology that could be integrated alongside the unorganised sector, which includes waste collectors.
