Gas Production from 130 Tonne of Waste in Belagavi

Belagavi is taking significant strides in waste management with the launch of two gas production plants at the Turmuri waste depot. A 30-tonne per day (TPD) plant will be set up by the Gas Authority of India (GAIL), while a larger 100 TPD facility will be developed under the Smart City-II initiative.

Although the contractor for these projects has not yet been decided, GAIL recently conducted a site inspection at Turmuri. The 30 TPD project will be fully funded by GAIL, with the Belagavi City Corporation providing a steady supply of wet waste. On the other hand, the Rs 1.35 billion budget for Smart City-II will partially fund the 100 TPD facility, with the city corporation also tasked with supplying 100 tonnes of waste daily.

Once both plants are operational, the city will need to supply a combined total of 130 tonne of wet waste per day, which will be converted into industrial-grade gas or compressed natural gas (CNG). Belagavi currently generates around 250-270 tonne of waste daily, with wet waste being processed into compost at Turmuri. The depot, established in 2006, initially focused on landfill disposal, but shifted to composting in 2007 under an agreement with Ramky Enviro (now Resustainability). However, with the new gas production plants in place, composting operations will be phased out.

The Smart City-II program includes five solid waste management projects, with a key focus on gas production from wet waste. While the delay in finalizing the contractor may affect the timeline, the GAIL initiative is expected to begin soon.
