Gujarat completes water connections in rural under Jal Jeevan Mission

State water resources and water supply minister Rushikesh Patel stated on Twitter that the Gujarat government had completed the Jal Jeevan Mission's goal of 100% tap water connections in rural areas.

Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, posted on Twitter that the state had accomplished this accomplishment on the occasion of the Gujarati new year (October 26) and had added another milestone to its growth journey.

The initiative, which was started by Prime Minister Modi in 2019, aims to provide every rural home with access to 55 litres of water per person per day through household tap connections by 2024.

鈥淚n Gujarat, a total of 91.73 lakh households in rural areas are provided water through tap connections under the mission. The 100% coverage of rural households is possible by laying 63,287 kilometres of distribution pipelines, 3,498 underground pumps, setting up 2,396 high tanks, 339 wells, 3,985 tube wells and 324 mini schemes and 302 solar-powered drinking water distribution systems,鈥 said a government official.

The state's water supply department has begun work on new projects worth Rs. 15,989 crore in addition to the Jal Jeevan Mission to provide rural residents with clean, consistent, and sufficient water, he said, adding that this money will also be used to upgrade the infrastructure under older schemes.

Harsh Sanghavi, the state minister for home, said in a tweet that Gujarat had completed the milestone of having 100% tap water connections two years before the 2024 target.

As part of the Centre's Jal Jeevan Scheme, all homes in Gujarat, Haryana, Goa, Telangana, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Puducherry, and Andaman & Nicobar Island now have access to clean drinking water.
