The Haryana government is considering a canal-based water supply system in Karnal. It plans to set up a canal-based water treatment plant, having a capacity of 100 million litres per day (MLD). The district authorities have also sent a proposal to the state government regarding the same. The Public Health Department (PHE) will discuss water availability with the Irrigation Department. After successful discussion, a canal-based water treatment plant will be developed on 42 acres of the land area near the Western Yamuna Canal. The treated water from the plant will be released directly into the city鈥檚 distribution network. There has been rapid and extensive use of groundwater in the Karnal block. The state witnessed a decline of 8.98 m in the groundwater level between 2000 and 2021, compared to 12.86 m during the same period. The water table in Karnal block was 9.11 m in 2000, which reached 18.09 m in 2021. Likewise, the water table in Karnal district was 8.57 m in 2000, reached 21.43 m in 2021. Deputy Commissioner, Anish Yadav, said that to provide an alternate source of water supply, the department had sent a proposal to the government. Currently, the district has a tubewell-based water supply system. The canal-based water supply system will reduce the burden on the groundwater. According to a report from the state water testing laboratory of the PHE Department, the quality of canal water was much better than the groundwater that is being supplied to households, commercial and government offices through taps.
