MET City achieves Platinum Green City Certification

The Model Economic Township, Haryana, has recently achieved the prestigious Platinum certification in the Green Cities category for its exemplary Green Master planning & design and Green Policy initiatives. This recognition was conferred upon MET City by The Confederation of Indian Industry's Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Notably, METL has garnered the highest score within the IGBC Green Cities Rating for Greenfield Cities, thus attaining the coveted Platinum rating. This remarkable achievement positions MET City as one of India's largest townships with Platinum-rated sustainability credentials.

Under the IGBC Green Cities Rating system, MET City's commitment to sustainable development was acknowledged through various initiatives. These initiatives encompass a 36 per cent mixed-use development, a compact city layout, 17 per cent allocation of public green spaces, the incorporation of a 55 per cent affordable housing component within its housing development, and the establishment of a comprehensive road network with streetscape enhancements. Additionally, MET City has implemented policies aimed at promoting the construction of green buildings within the city.

In line with its sustainability goals, MET City has strategically devised plans to enhance energy efficiency. This includes adhering to the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) for buildings, transitioning to 100 per cent LED street lighting utilising Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technology, and integrating a 31 per cent solar energy component into its infrastructure. Notably, the city has also implemented two compact Geographic Information System (GIS)-based substations, which occupy only 10 per cent of the land area while delivering a 90 per cent reduction in land use.

Furthermore, MET City has embraced comprehensive water management practices, including mandatory rainwater harvesting for buildings, a 30 per cent reduction in potable water consumption, and the treatment and reuse of 100 per cent of wastewater. Recognising the national significance of solid waste management, METL has put in place plans for 60 per cent waste recycling and aims to minimise waste sent to landfills to less than 5 per cent.

Shrivallabh Goyal, CEO & WTD of MET City, expressed his satisfaction with this achievement, stating, "IGBC Platinum represents a significant milestone in MET City's sustainable development journey. Our top score in this category underscores our unwavering commitment to green initiatives. We are dedicated to creating a Greenfield Smart city with a focus on sustainable mobility, abundant power and water supply, environmental monitoring, and maximising the utilisation of renewable resources. Our Integrated command and control centre ensures the safety of the city, and our efforts in solar energy, wastewater treatment, waste management, and GIS-based substations benefit numerous companies, employees, and residents within MET City."

He further articulated, "Our vision is to position MET City as North India's fastest-growing business destination with a strong emphasis on sustainable urban development."
