NMC to make C&D recycling plant operational in six months

The civic council has set a six-month timeframe for the operation of its proposed construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling plant. For this objective, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has finally identified a plot of land near to the current civic compost factory in Pathardi, on the city's outskirts.

During a recent meeting with representatives from several industries, NMC commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar stated that the contractor for the project has been finalised and that the work order will be issued soon, allowing the actual construction to begin immediately.

Before, NMC wanted to build the C&D waste recycling plant on land set aside in Makhmalabad, but citizens there were outraged. According to local officials, seven to eight acres of land have been set aside for slaughterhouses near to the civic body's current compost factory in Pathardi. The land reservation was amended, and it was agreed to build the recycling plant there instead.

With construction activities heating up across the city, the state government ordered the NMC to set up a facility for recycling and reusing construction debris. Recycling construction debris in the city is one of the characteristics under the Swachh Survekshan, and it is one of the reasons NMC's ranking has declined in the study over the last two to three years.

However, the civic government now hopes to have this plant operating within the next six months so that it can contribute to Nashik's next Swachh Survekshan ranking.
