PMC to use software system to monitor solid waste management workers

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed to utilise a software-based system for keeping track of and monitoring the solid waste management workers.

GPS-based wristbands will be used for this purpose.

On Tuesday, the standing committee of the PMC approved funding for this project.

Chairman of the standing committee, Hemant Rasane, told the media that according to the plan tabled before the standing committee, Rs 18 crore would be used on this technology. The funds will be made available via Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited and the union government.

The usage of this technology would keep a check and balance the chief solid waste management process and manpower included in it. The duties involve picking up waste, its segregation and processing. Complaints regarding the garbage pickers can be sorted out with this system.

According to the PMC data, about 2,100 tonnes of garbage is produced daily in municipal areas. It involves dry waste, wet waste and mixed waste. The quantity has surged by about 300 tonne as 23 villages were added to the municipal limits.
