Telangana allots Rs 1,200 cr to ramp up water supply in Hyderabad

With several hundreds of new colonies coming up on the outskirts of Hyderabad, the Telangana government allocated Rs 1,200 crore for augmenting the water supply network to these new colonies.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will lay 2,000 km of pipelines and build almost 100 small reservoirs for supplying drinking water to these new colonies.

Official sources said the HMWSSB had already finished works on the drinking water network at Rs 700 crore in phase 1.

But, this network was limited to only village settlements outside the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

A senior official of the municipal administration department said that hundreds of new colonies are coming up as the Hyderabad metropolitan area development is increasing every year. The city will further expand outside the present outer ring road (ORR) also if the new regional ring road (RRR) is developed. The government is focusing on providing a drinking water network.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao urged the municipal authorities to ensure no water scarcity in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) areas and each household to be provided with 130 ml water per day.
