India's coal shortage to soar by 2017

Against the backdrop of the widening demand-supply gap, India's coal shortage may soar to 200 mn tonne by 2017 compared to 142 mn tonne by 2012. The fossil-fuel demand for the terminal year of the next plan (2016-17) is projected at 1,000 mn tonne, against a production of 800 mn tonne. The demand-supply gap in the last year of the present plan (2007-12) has been assessed at 142 mn tonne with availability of only 554 mn tonne against the requirement of 696 mn tonne. The Planning Commission has fixed a lowered growth rate target for the next plan period (Twelfth Plan) of 7.5 per cent as against 8.9 per cent of the current plan, which is also unlikely to be met.
