Captive and Commercial Coal Mines Record Strong Growth in Apr 2025 Intro:

Coal production from captive and commercial mines reached 14.01 Mn tonnes in April 2025, while coal dispatch stood at 16.81 Mn tonnes, signalling a strong start to the financial year 2025鈥26. This reflects notable year-on-year growth over the same period in financial years 2023鈥24 and 2022鈥23.

The Ministry of Coal attributes this performance to proactive policy measures, streamlined monitoring, and active stakeholder engagement, which have accelerated operational clearances and enhanced production capacities across the sector.

A key development contributing to this growth was the operational launch of new coal blocks. Central Coalfields Limited began production at the Kotre Basantpur Pachmo block on 15 April 2025, with a peak rated capacity of 5 Mn tonnes per annum. The Naini coal block, operated by Singareni Collieries Company Limited, commenced production on 16 April 2025 and has a peak rated capacity of 10 Mn tonnes per annum.

The Ministry reaffirmed its focus on expanding captive and commercial coal mining, aiming to ensure consistent supply, increase domestic output, and support India鈥檚 rising energy requirements.
