Coal India laying focus on energy efficiency, plans carbon reduction

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has set up a special force on energy efficiency measures and is moving forward with a series of actions to balance carbon emission in the mining operation in all its coal-producing agencies.

CIL has also established a 5-year plan of carbon offset in various fields of its operation.

Coal companies have several fields for implementing energy efficiency measures like buildings, colonies, offices, industrial enterprises, etc., apart from efficient Power Supply Management.

Although, the main reduction in carbon emission comes from different mining activities like Heavy Earth Moving Machines (HEMM), Pumping, Transport Ventilation, etc. With the help of its subsidiaries, CIL had been practising different energy conservation and efficiency measures over the years and is now progressing forward the importance of activities responsible for environmental pollution.

The major pressure is replacing the large fleet of HEMM equipment running either by CIL departmentally or contractually on diesel consumption with LNG.

It will be a breakthrough in lowering down costs but will also decrease carbon emissions. CIL has taken action to go for the Pilot Project with GAIL in a few mine sites of CIL before starting bulk use of LNG.

GAIL will set up an LNG storage & dispensing system, provide transport of LNG from terminal to mine site & will arrange KIT and retrofitting.

BEML would give all technical help. The performance of the dumper and engine will be observed and studied during the whole pilot period in collaboration with Cummins.

One of the Pilot projects at Bharatpur Opencast Mine of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. in Odisha will be finished by the year-end.

A comprehensive model is being devised to convert maximum heavy vehicles to LNG in the upcoming years.

Another necessary addition would be introducing about 1,500 e-vehicles in all mining areas of CIL over the next five years. Around 200 e-vehicles alone would be put in order by the end of this year.

Opencast and underground mines pump water on a large scale, with the help of orthodox equipment, which utilises more energy. CIL will introduce around 1700 energy-efficient motors for pumps in each of the mining operations.

With the implementation of the energy efficiency measures, CIL aims to create a carbon offset of nearly 2.5 lakh tonne in the next five years.
