In a significant move towards expanding renewable energy sources and ensuring grid stability, Andhra Pradesh is spearheading the promotion of Pumped Storage Hydropower Projects (PSHPs). Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K. Vijayanand highlighted the state's pioneering efforts and shared that feasibility reports for PSHPs, capable of generating a massive 33,240 Megawatts (MW) across 29 locations, have been prepared. Among these, projects with a capacity of 5,000 MW are slated to be established by AP-Genco in collaboration with the National Hydro Power Corporation.
Vijayanand emphasised the progress in implementing the Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Policy and securing 7,000 MW of solar power from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). Additionally, efforts by AP-Transco have led to a commendable reduction in transmission losses to 2.69 per cent.
The state is also making significant strides in hydropower. The 960-MW hydropower plant at Polavaram, undertaken by AP-Genco, is on track to commission seven units in the fiscal year 2024-25, with the remaining five to follow in FY 2025-26. This venture aligns with Andhra Pradesh's commitment to enhancing its Renewable Energy (RE) footprint.
Vijayanand highlighted the value of PSHPs in facilitating grid stability by balancing the variable RE generation within a short timeframe. Recognising the substantial capital investment required for these projects, the state has introduced the A.P. Pumped Storage Power Promotion Policy, 2022, aimed at attracting private investments.
Furthermore, the recently introduced Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Policy underscores the state's dedication to sustainable energy initiatives. In pursuit of grid stability and meeting demand requirements, AP-Genco is considering a 1,350-MW capacity PSHP at the existing upper Sileru reservoir. This project holds the key to maintaining equilibrium in the grid despite the fluctuating nature of wind and solar power.
The state's leadership in promoting PSHPs and advancing its energy transition is set to propel Andhra Pradesh toward a greener, more sustainable energy future.
