By now, we鈥檙e sure readers of CW are familiar with the Lean construction concept, which we focused on extensively in our October 2021 issue. The Institute for Lean Construction Excellence (ILCE), a not-for-profit construction industry body engaged in the development and propagation of Lean construction management in the country, organises periodic events for this purpose. ILCE had earlier organised a series of national conferences 鈥揑LCC 2015, ILCC 2017 and ILCC 2019 in Mumbai, Chennai and Pune respectively 鈥 and international conferences, such as IGLC 2018 (International Group for Lean Construction) in Chennai and LIPS (Lean in Public Sector) 2019 in New Delhi, in association with suitable local bodies. In continuation, ILCE tied up with CEPT University to organise ILCC 2021 at its beautiful, architecturally rich campus in Ahmedabad, in association with IIT Madras, with the theme, 鈥楻einventing with Lean - Post COVID鈥, to offer the construction industry some ideas to get back on the rails. The four-day event comprised a workshop day, an industry day and two days of technical conference. The event was a great success, attended by numerous Lean enthusiasts from all over the country from the construction industry as well as academia. A notable feature was that such a major conference was conducted and attended in hybrid mode, with both speakers and delegates attending in person or participating online, a great feat of coordination indeed! The workshop day was intended to train the attendees in some Lean concept implementation in an interactive mode. This year, there were three parallel workshops: 鈥楾arget Value Delivery鈥 (TVD) conducted by Dr Zofia Rybkowski of Texas A&M University, USA; 鈥楿sing LPS to improve Productivity鈥 by Alan Mossman, Principal, The Change Business, UK; and 鈥楧ecoding the Lean in Production鈥 by Dr Bhargav Dave, Founder, Visilean, a Finnish company. All three workshop directors delivered great value to the participants despite the constraints involved in online presentations and hybrid participation. The industry day was designed to share the best practices of the construction industry in Lean concepts and also to cover use of automation. There were many invited talks on the use of Lean for applications in the industry and the use of automation and digitalisation in construction projects. Of particular interest were two panel discussions on 鈥楾he Future of Automation in Indian Lean Projects鈥 and 鈥楻ole of Specialist Software in Lean Implementation鈥.The two conference days featured several keynote and invited talks on Lean applications in construction and on how to apply Lean gainfully. Delegates expressed special interest in the panel discussions on 鈥楬ow to Implement Lean in Project Sites in India鈥 and 鈥楬ow to Teach Lean in Colleges鈥.The speakers comprised senior professionals from the construction industry from notable organisations such as Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Shapoorji Pallonji, Afcons Infra, URC Constructions, Godrej Construction, Turner Construction, KPMG India, Bentley Systems, KBM Infra, Wipro and Excelize and leading academics from IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, NICMAR Pune and Hyderabad, Amity University- RICS SBE as well as international speakers Dr Zofia Rybkowski, Alan Mossman and Dr Bhargav Dave. The conference featured the presentation of some 69 technical papers in three parallel sessions and 20 technical posters. A highlight of the conference was the conferral of ILCE鈥檚 Lean Lifetime Achievement Award to Prof N Raghavan, ILCE Director and Professor of Practice, IIT-M, was felicitated for his contribution in the field of Lean construction propagation and research. He has been the moving force behind several conferences such as ILCC 2015, ILCC2017, IGLC2018, LIPS219 and steered ILCC 2019 and ILCC 2021; well-known in international Lean circles; set up the systems for ILCE webinars; developed and implemented Lean training programmes in projects; developed the lean maturity model; developed a simulation exercise for the collaborative planning system; and has set up many collaborations for ILCE.This conference was a great milestone for the development of Lean practices in the Indian construction industry, bringing together leading Lean practitioners and enthusiasts from the industry and academia and sharing efficient Lean paradigms and practices.
