The exterior of Pine Nut Cabane, a wooden retreat in the south of France designed by London studio Daab Design in collaboration with cabin manufacturer Moustache Bois, is clad in scorched wood planks.
The 35 sq m cabin was built for a family who needed a versatile space for their existing farmhouse that could be used as a painting studio, guest house, or gathering space.
Pine Nut Cabane is located in the family's favourite spot on the rural property, a small clearing between a pine forest and an olive grove where they paint and play petanque.
Daab Design clad the cabin in scorched pine wood planks that take cues from the area's farming vernacular to complement its setting.
The glazed corner of Pine Nut Cabane faces eastwards to capture the rising sun over a nearby valley, while the pine forest acts as a shield from the harsh southern sun.
The black timber-lined entrance area and limestone-paved terrace, which are sheltered by the deep eaves along the cabin's northern edge, are defined by a cut in the northeastern corner of the structure.
Inside, two simple rooms with large windows are positioned at either end of the cabin and designed to accommodate a variety of potential uses.
The spaces can easily be transformed from guest bedrooms to studios for painting or yoga thanks to built-in storage and desks.
A central bathroom pod, finished in matte black wood and featuring a cave-like shower lined with terracotta tiles, sits between the two rooms.
Matte black wood was also used for full-height doors that can be closed to create a central corridor and cross ventilate the cabin when needed, or left open to create a central corridor and cross ventilate the cabin when needed.
The eastern room of Pine Nut Cabane has a glazed corner that leads to a wood-decked terrace with a seating area and firepit, as well as dramatic views of the landscape.
Internal finishes include plywood panelling and polished concrete floors, which contrast with the matte black finish of the doors, bathroom pod, and window frames to create a sense of calm and respite from the harsh sun.
