Government approves 1.15 crore houses under PMAY-U

The Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri told the media that the government has approved 1.15 crore houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), ending in March 2022, and many under construction projects would be completed in the next 18 months.

The minister said that it is not under consideration to examine this continuance of the credit-linked subsidy scheme beyond March 31, 2022.

He told the media that the prime minister dreamed that every Indian has a pukka roof on their head, including kitchen and shauchalay (toilet).

The title of the house would be in the name of the house's lady, either singly or co-jointly.

In June 2015, the PMAY-U scheme was launched, and the housing demand has increased well beyond the initial projection of 1 crore.

The minister said that now, the number is 1.15 crore, and in the last three fiscal days, it would increase more.

In June 2015, every state had to submit a demand estimate to the Centre, based on which one crore houses would have to be constructed.

Singh said that under PMAY-U, the Centre approved 1.15 crore houses under four individual verticles.

Out of these, 70 lakh houses have been grounded, and nearly 46 lakh have been provided to the beneficiaries.

He said that the state government collects the demand needs of the citizens and sends them to the Central Government after consolidating them.

The Housing and Urban Affairs Minister said that the scheme has grown and completed its process, and the government would ensure the completion of any sanctioned project.
