The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced it will build seven buildings to rehabilitate 800 families impacted by the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project. BMC has identified land in Kanjurmarg west around Lal Bahadur Shashtri (LBS) Marg for making 23-storey buildings for housing more than 800 families. The civic body is constructing a 12.2-km GMLR with twin tunnels passing via Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) to reduce traffic between the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai. This would be the fourth connector in the city. BMC officials informed that the GMLR project construction would affect families in the Khindipada area Bhandup and Film City at Goregaon. According to the document, rehabilitation of 660 residential families, 52 commercial establishments, and nearly 100 families from deprived societies would take place. This year, the construction work of these buildings will begin. The BMC has requested Rs 100 crore for the rehabilitation work in the budget for the financial year (FY) 2022-23. The GMLR is divided into four phases to expedite the work. An official revealed that for the work related to the project, Rs 1,300 crore is allotted to BMC in the budget this year. The road from Western Express Highway to Film City in Goregaon would be linked to Amar Nagar in Mulund west and further Eastern Express Highway passing via the main railway tracks. The twin-tube tunnels would be around 4.7 km long and go via SGNP, nearly 25-200 metres underground. In November 2020, BMC changed the construction cost of twin tunnels and associated work to Rs 6,225 crore. Initially, the estimate for the project was Rs 4,770 crore.
