Construction, real estate industry protests on surging cement price

On Saturday, members from the construction and real estate industry coalition protested outside the cement manufacturer's residence at Boat Club, Chennai, for the steep rise in the prices of cement.

S Yuvaraj, Secretary of the coalition, said that a 50 kg bag of cement is sold at Rs 350 in Delhi and Rs 370 in Andhra Pradesh. But the same cement manufacturer is selling the material at Rs 520 in Tamil Nadu. This price is the highest in the country, which is affecting all the construction sectors.

He said there is no basis for such a substantial rise in cement prices. According to him, cartelisation is the reason for the increase in the price of the main construction material.

On Saturday, the South India Cement Manufacturers Association announced that they would make sure that the cement will be available at a reasonable and acceptable price for the public.
