Govt to cut buffer zone from boundaries of Thane Flamingo Sanctuary

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change(MoEF) has agreed to reduce the buffer zone from the eco-sensitive boundary of the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary to 3.89 km from the original 10 km.

The no-development rule would have harmed hundreds of construction projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, so this comes as a huge relief to builders.

The president, Deepak Goradia, told the media that the ministry had agreed to reduce the buffer zone and that the ministry would issue an official notification later. The media reported on July 31 that the 10 km buffer zone would affect projects in as many as 15 wards in Greater Mumbai.

As we have reported earlier, realty developers had urged the Maharashtra government and the central government to interfere and take expedited and effective steps to circulate the final notification of the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) around the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary to continue the development activity in Thane, Navi Mumbai, MIDC, Mumbai and Raigad area.
